Efmody®

(hydrocortisone modified-release capsules 5 mg and 10 mg)

What is Efmody?

Efmody® (modified-release hard capsules) is a medicine used to treat an adrenal disorder known as Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH).

One pack of Efmody® contains a bottle with 50 hard capsules with controlled release. One capsule contains the substance hydrocortisone and is available in two strengths: 5 mg and 10 mg.

Who is Efmody® for?

Efmody® can be prescribed by doctors for adults with CAH or adolescents aged 12 and over with CAH.

What does Efmody®do?

CAH is caused by a gene abnormality. Because of this abnormality in the gene, one enzyme (usually 21-hydroxylase) does not function properly or does not function at all. This enzyme is necessary for the production of hormones in the adrenal gland. Because of this, the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol and aldosterone. The cortisol deficiency means the hypophysis (or pituitary gland) keeps stimulating the production of cortisol. This causes enlargement of the adrenal glands. However, they are only capable of making one type of hormone: androgens (male hormones). As such, a surplus of androgens occurs.

Doctors prescribe hydrocortisone to compensate for adrenal gland hormone deficiency in people with CAH. Efmody® is a product that contains hydrocortisone in a modified release formula.
