Theroid disorders

When your body falls out of balance

The thyroid is a small gland in your neck, yet it has a major influence on your body. This butterfly-shaped organ produces hormones that regulate your metabolism, energy, growth, and even your mood. When the thyroid doesn’t function properly, you may notice changes in many aspects of your daily life.

When the Thyroid works too slowly

The most common thyroid condition is an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), in which the body produces too little thyroid hormone. In the Netherlands, it is estimated that around 500,000 people are affected by this condition.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Persistent fatigue or sluggishness
  • Feeling cold easily
  • Forgetfulness or difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Hair loss, dry skin, or hoarseness
  • Unexplained weight gain

Not everyone experiences the same symptoms, and additional blood tests are often needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment and support

An underactive thyroid is usually treated with medication that replaces the missing hormone (thyroxine). There are different forms and dosages available. It may take some time, together with your doctor, to find the right balance so that you start to feel better again.

Living with a Thyroid disorder

Thyroid problems can have a significant impact, but fortunately, there are effective treatment options. The key is to stay in regular contact with your doctor so that treatment and guidance are tailored to your personal situation.
